As you progress throughout your administrative career, you may wonder when the best time to look for a new administrative job is. However, the decision to leave can often be a difficult one. This is especially true if you do not know if you are moving on for the right reasons.
“Admins are expected to constantly address the needs of executives and support other employees, and in order to do this successfully, you need to be happy and comfortable in your role,” says Kaitlyn Doyle, an Associate in The Execu|Search Group’s Office Support & Human Resources divisions. “If you’re starting to have doubts about your current employer, it may be beneficial to take a step back, re-evaluate your situation, and decide whether you should begin looking for a new administrative job.”
If you’re an admin currently trying to figure out if now is the time to make a career move, ask yourself the following questions:
Is Your Executive Leaving / Retiring?
The bond between an administrative professional and executive can be unique, which is why a disruption to that relationship can be a sign that it’s time to begin looking for a new administrative job. “For many administrative professionals, losing an executive whom they’ve gotten to know on a personal and professional level can be a major blow,” says Kaitlyn. “Even though your current role is still intact, the nature of this job will certainly change once a new executive fills that position.” This scenario isn’t an immediate sign to begin looking for opportunities, but it should tell you to pay attention to how your role may change going forward.
Are You No Longer Motivated By The Work?
Administrative work can be redundant, and it’s perfectly normal to want growth and change over the course of your career. For some admins, these feelings are a clear sign to move on. However, Kaitlyn advises some extra thought in this scenario. “If you’re unhappy and unmotivated by the work, write a list of the variables that are and aren’t in your control,” she says. “If you see there are plenty of changes you can make on your end, stay put. If not, don’t be afraid to see what else is out there!”
Has Your Office Undergone Major Changes?
Office shake-ups can have a major impact on the overall office environment. As someone in a support role, you know how much of an effect personnel changes can have on you and your ability to do your work well. “If the culture becomes unrecognizable, it may be time to start looking for a new opportunity,” says Kaitlyn. “While you don’t want to make any rash decisions, prioritizing your professional and personal happiness is important in this scenario!”
Have Your Priorities Shifted?
As you further your administrative career, it’s expected that your personal and professional priorities will change. “Senior-level employees and companies can be very demanding, and this level of demand may no longer work for you as time goes on,” explains Kaitlyn. “If your employer is unwilling to compromise with you on things like having more traditional hours or telecommuting options, it could signal that it’s time to look for a new administrative job that better meets your needs.”
